Yes in november the weather is bad in perhentian, probably not the worse but still not fun for a beach holiday.
snorkling is not much fun if the visibility is low and the waters a bit rough.
that being said the snorkling is lovely there when the weather is right
Where are you now? there may be some alternatives.
Perhentian Islands are on the east coast of Malaysia, and unfortunately November is a bad time for the area. They're open to the elements coming in from the South China Sea, not helped by the monsoon coming straight at the coast. Most places will be closed, flood is common, the sea can be extremely rough. You'll be hard pushed to see the tranquil sea of blue with beautiful sky and white sandy beach.
You may want to try destinations on the west coast instead, like Langkawi, or Penang.

We live in Amsterdam and are leaving in 2 weeks to go to Kuala Lumpur. I only need to be in Penang for work two days and the rest we haven't decided where to go. I am looking at Langkawi now. And I think maybe Pankor. So no east coast : (

You'll probably find more to do in Langkawi than in Pangkor. Admittedly there are also more tourists heading to Langkawi since Pangkor is much smaller, pretty much a working fishermen island. In any case, I suspect tourists who want to really splurge go to Pangkor Laut instead of Pangkor main island, since there's an exclusive private resort there (but it also costs a small fortune to be there).
You should spend some time around in Penang, of which part of the island has plenty of colonial charm, and the influence of Buddhism is evident all over the island with some pretty impressive temples. The working part of it, well, maybe not quite that idyllic, but hey, it is a pretty industrious island on its own right.

I agree with the previous posters, langkawi and pangkor would be good alternatives.
Langkawi is much more touristy than pangkor (main island - i've never known anyone that has been to pangkor laut as it is super exclusive and expensive.) Also pangkor doesnt have as much to do on the island or beach bungalows.

There is not much more I can add to what has been posted regarding the weather on the east coast of Malaysia. It's the rainy season this time of the year. If the rainy weather bears down on you on the West Coast, it's normally for a short while. Heavy downpour occurs when the God of Thunder bellows and it's over in half an hour or so.
However, if the thunder rolls on lazily, you can be assured that the downpour will be continuous. So you can plan what to do on days like these. Langkawi definitely has more to offer in terms of accommodation, budget or otherwise. Lots of water activities and ecotourism too. You'll not be bored.
If you still have ample time, you might want to visit Melaka where your ancestors have made their mark.
I guess everyone is correct when they say Langkawi or Pangkor. But then again, it all depends on what time of traveler you are. East coast islands shut from as early as mid October right till late March where some of the smaller resort choose to remain open as there are guests that prefer to go during the off seasons as prices are slashed.
Well, on the bright side, it does NOT raid 24/7 there as if you are lucky, you may even get a stretch of sunshine. If you are going for diving, then it's a different story. Personally, I have been to the East Coast islands in November few years ago, just to experience what the monsoon is all about. Really, it's not as bad as what I have read. But for a local, it's fine. For a tourist, it could spell disaster.

Thnx for your reply! I've heard so many different things now... Some people say absolutely "not" go... Others like you say it can be ok, but if the weather gets bad..it really get's bad. And off course with a 2 year old at our side, it's hard for me to decide. The best thing for us to do is check the weather when we arrive at KL the 10th. The resorts I have tried to get in touch with on the east-coast are all closed or dont reply. And they say KApas is totally deserted..
