I have family who always go for vacation but always check the comfort of the place once they stay in a place somewhere in the beach. There are some who wants to stay in luxurious place because their reason is that, it is just once or maybe it cannot happen again to be in a luxurious place.
Well, I'd say if you will be going to have fun and relax on a beach, then enjoy it completely by pampering yourself to the max. with the best room if you can afford it... whenever I go out to stay for a few days on a beach, of course I'd still consider the price and I'd get whichever is in my budget limit. if I can afford the best room then I'd get it. its just a matter of budgeting...
We usually get mad tired while out on the town. For us, all thats needed is a mattress and pillow. Oh and a closeby bucket of coffee in the morning.
Its nice when we're working abroad and get free top dog rooms, but not something I'd ever spend money on myself.
Unless it's a strictly pampering holiday where most of the time will be spent at the hotel (e.g. taking advantage of their spa, massage package etc) I think luxury room would be relatively unnecessary expenses.
For anyone who will be spending most of the time away, the hotel is literally a place to sleep for the night and that's about it. So in that case, a simple room works as well, as long as it's comfortable and the place is clean.
I've once had the misfortune of staying at a relatively known hotel in the area I was in, but I had to use the shower with my eyes close because it looked like it hasn't been cleaned, errm, forever. There were stains on the shower door, and at all edges, there were bathroom fungal growing. I checked out right the next day - I've seen shared bathroom in hostels much more hygienic than that!
(Oh yes I lodged a complain. And guess what, I never heard anything back)

I dislike staying in chain properties - it's just so impersonal. I have stayed in one of the most expensive hotels in Paris (my parents paid the bill) and I hated the snooty place. Everyone is different I guess, but now I seek out inexpensive or moderate places with a little more personality than one gets at Holiday Inn. Recently I've been totally spoiled by the high quality of inexpensive (for me) small hotels in SE Asia. One little place in Chiang Mai actually charged me less than the price quoted at the time of the reservation!
