I will be unemployed come May and I will finally get the chance to spend some time travelling abroad in Europe. I plan on going for at least 6 weeks in May and early June. I will be focusing most of my time In Italy as I have family and friends in Bari, Pescara and around Rome. This will also give me a home base where I can leave extra luggage or whatever.
What a great prospect for you!
Though I'm puzzled you say you are interested in culture and not art
There is so much in Italy, you'll be spoilt for choice.
Have you considered hiring a campervan once you get to Europe? This would give you the flexibility you require, and you could easily get off the beaten track by travelling in this way.
Italy is campsite heaven!
if you'd like any more details, please don't hesitate to ask.
Have a great time

Try using busabout, youll meet like minded travellers and you can hop on/off at all kinds of destinations whenever you want too. Its not a guided tour like contiki, simply just a means of transportation. Good thing is its cheap and they'll drop you right at your door, if stayin in their partner hostels. I was in a simular situation to you a few years ago, definately cheaper than the train and youll get to see the country side too.
Good luck
I agree this might be a good solution for you - we met plenty of 'busabout' people and they were a great bunch!
Mainly Aussies and Kiwis - all friendly young people and even some 'older' ones!
Just a word of warning about some of the places they stayed - there seemed to be a lot of theft from the accommodation, so be aware of this!
