Going in March I definitely recommend starting in Rome, going down to Sicily and then making it up to London.
You can either:
- fly into Rome and out of London
- fly in and out of London and catch a budget flight down to either Rome, Naples or Sicily at the beginning of your trip. See www.skyscanner.net, look for one-way flights from London to Italy in March.
Maria, thanks for your reply! As per your suggestion, I'm gonna fly to London then head to Italy.
Some follow-up questions, if anyone can help me out...
1) I know flying between London and Italy is faster and much cheaper, but I'm very attracted to seat61.com's suggestion of a scenic route by train: London>Paris>Zurich(stopover)>Milan>Venice. Does it sound insane?
2) Found someone's 2-week itinerary for Italy and decided to follow it: Venice, Cinque Terre, Florence, Rome.
I'd like to see Pompeii and Amalfi Coast too, so likely tagging it on after Rome - would 3 days with Sorrento as base be ideal? Or should I just do Pompeii as a day trip from Rome?
3) From Madrid, would it be a better idea to head straight to Paris then go to Provence from there? Or could I go from Madrid to Provence then to Paris?
4) Has anyone been to the La Febria de Abril in Seville, Spain? Is it worth paying the extra for accommodation to go and check it out?

No, it is not. But you can easily take this route on the way back to London or Paris, so no point in doing it both ways.

I suggest you look into a flight to Naples from London and reverse your initiary. Venice, Cinque Terre, Florence, Rome, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast is pretty much straight north to south. Since you plan to go back to London after you have been around Italy it would make more sense to go south to north. I thus suggest you start in Naples and then go north to Venice. From Venice you can then take the train back to London via Paris. It would save you backtracking on yourself. If you plan to visit Cinque Terre and the Provence it can make sense to play around with the train schedules a bit. For example if you wanted to travel from Venice to Paris it could make sense to go Venice-Cinque Terre-Provence-Paris.
The Amalfi coast and Pompeii are just a bit south of Naples. Unless you plan to hike in the area you can base yourself in Naples or Pompeii for your explorations of the Amalfi coast, it only takes roughly one hour to get there from Naples. Considering the coast of accomodation along the Amalfi coast this can be the economical better option. 3-4 days would be a good timeframe for the area.

Taking the train system in France into account I would say it is better to go Madrid-Paris-Provence.
BTW, since you want to combine Spain with Italy there are some tips:
- There are some cheap flights from Rome to Barcelona. If you can get one it can make sense to take the train from London to Venice, travel down to Naples and then fly over to Barcelona from Rome.
- Instead of flying to Italy from London you can easily catch a cheap flight to Seville, then travel to Barcelona, fly to Rome, travel around Italy and take the train back to Paris and London. Or vice versa.
- It is not a good idea to ride the train from Italy all the way to Spain along the southern coast of France. The train ride is long, boring, uncomfortable and expensive. It makes only sense if you plan to stop along the way.
- Flights from Venice to Paris are very cheap and can be quite scenic too if the weather is good. The scenic thing to see are the snow-covered peaks of the Alps. IMO they are better from above than from a train (seat61.com suggestion), but YMMV.
