Which is the better city to stay in
Depends what you want to do,i'd say if you cant walk very far then go to the city with the best boat tours and public transportation or rent a scooter to get around..
I've been to Mackinac Island several times, and it's probably cheaper to stay in St. Ignace, and then just take a ferry out to the island. But you can't beat staying on the island, it's so beautiful and historic. It might be worth it to stay for one night. You can rent a horse carriage to take you to your hotel on the island.
