Tourists buying a car in the USA

Hi,
My English boyfriend, and me, an Aussie girl are planning on road tripping the USA for 3 months. I have been researching the possibility of BUYING a car as opposed to renting. I feel renting a car for 3 months will be too much money, thus think buying would work out better financially. However, from my research I see it is not easy to do so as I don’t have a social security number or permanent address in the USA. I was wondering a few things
1. If there are companies on the EAST coast who organize the buying and selling of cars to tourists. (I realize that this is possible in Washington State and Nevada, but I am yet to find an East Coast company that does this)
2. Whether my good friend, who lives in Washington DC, is able to buy the car and then lean it to me and my boyfriend, but everything is under my friends name – insurance, registration etc.
3. If there are any long term rental companies that actually work out to be quite cheap
Any tips would be highly appreciated as I literally can’t seem to find the answers for the above questions and it is doing my head in

Renee,
I chatted with you before on buying here in NV. Easy here, not sure there. I think you could use your friend to solve this problem. Have your friend buy, license, insure a car/van. Have them write up a document that states they are letting you use the vehicle. I did this once for a friend of mine that needed a vehicle. I was going to be in Thailand for 6 months, so I stated that he had permission to drive my vehicle. The only problem I see is with the insurance company. Have your friend chat with their insurance agent and see if the vehicle is still insured with you driving it. Problem solved if the insurance is valid with you driving. If not, see if there is a way to pay extra so that you can drive it legally.

Good luck with your planned US trip. If you come to Vegas, I will help you buy a vehicle in 1-2 days. Then off you go on your US adventure. Or contact me when you come to town and I will try to get you a couple free shows while you are here. Mike

thanks for that Mike. Yeh, I re read what you wrote to me last time we spoke, but then I had some one say that that isnt possible, so am just trying to get all the facts. I spoke to an insurance company who told me it’s fine, but then I heard another person say that they only tell you that to get your business… so I am just trying to get all my facts right.

The thing is, we HAVE to drive from East to West, as we are meeting people etc, so even though you have this great offer for a car in Nevada we really need it in NYC or somewhere near there. It would be a pleasure meeting with you, just to hear your stories etc.

But just wondering if anyone had any tips for the long trip, for example cheap accommodation options, food etc etc.

Thanks x
