Hey, I was just looking for some advice on a camera to buy to take travelling? I want something quite small and compact, but which takes great pictures. I don't want something that is going to make me stand out t£oo much more than necessary, hence why I want something quite small. Any ideas? I don't really want to spend too much, no more than £100/£150, just in case I do lose or damage it while I'm away. Thanks.
I have a Canon Powershot SX 120 IS, 10 MP/10 optical zoom. Makes quite good pictures and also reasonable films. Pictures taken at night with the flash are not even that grainy.
I have it for over a year now and took it on several trips, tested in cities/nature and in different kinds of weather (no problems in the rain). Think it's around 120 pounds.
The camera is relatively 'compact' (though not that flat), so it'll fit at least in the pocket of your jacket.
I personally find it a good product for its money . No complains about it yet. Also, it uses 2 AA batteries, so you don't have to worry about running out of battery, with the usual specific lithium-ion batteries.
Otherwise you could try one of the compact Nikon models, under 100 pounds, and as far as I know, nikon usually has a quite good picture quality.
I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT1 which is shock proof and waterproof, Im not sure how much they are as mine is a few years old.
I absolutely love it as I am quite clumsy and have dropped it many many time and it doesnt mind at all. The waterproof feature is also a lot of fun and I used it heaps while travelling - especially at the beach.
You can easily have Canon or Sony point and shoot cameras. Most of the latest ones already have great quality. And they're pretty much compact... like Sony Cybershot... so you would really love and enjoy taking pictures.
Canon Powershot and Panasonic Lumix are the best in this price category. Unfortunately, Lumix product availability is not very good in the UK but you may find something.
If I had to choose I would opt for Lumix because its video function is better.
