Canon 5D vs 550D for long term traveller / photographer

Hi Debs,
5D every time, i got a 20D and wouldn't think of swapping it.
Ok most of the time i only take my Ixus 120, but the last trip to NZ/Aus/Thailand & Singapore I dragged the 20D along, and glad i did.
You want something that is robust, and if your used to shooting it why not take it.
Weight problems, just leave the laptop, guide book at home.

I just bought the 550D and have been testing it before I head overseas for a year or so. I am very impressed with it and the quality of the pics. I use a lowepro backpack to that fits my notebook PC. Take a spare battery and cards..can get cheap on ebay. Weight... Not a big concern, backpack in room most the time while the Lowepro bag is my day bag.

Thanks for your reply. The 550D is using advanced technology compared to my 5D which is now 4 years old.

I won't be taking a notebook / laptop, so I won't have that weight to worry about.

I need to look into having a server which I can upload my images to as well as lots of cards.

My main concern is the weight and security - mainly from my brother scaring the hell out of me!

Hi there, Look, if you are concerned about practicality, go for 550d.
If you are concerned about new and better features, go for 550d

If you are still emotionally clung to your 5d... naaa, go for th 550d.
I am buying one tomorrow, trust me, being the latest available camera from canon and having a DiG!C4 VS DiG!C2
I think that is enuff argument.

One thing, not to throw the 5d after smashing it, there is one thing that makes the 5d more worthy is that a 5d is a full frame cam, no honestly I don't know how much of a win that is.

Bottomn line, if I wer you, I would go for the 550.

Also, don't forget that with the 550D you get 18 mega pixels instead of 12.8, and if you sell images, you can also sell Full H.D. videos!
