Travel In Group, It Is Suck. How About You?

Hello, Travellers Point Community

Good Luck Out there.

Now, how about you folks? Have you ever had same experience with me? Do you agree if travel in group is for old people (around 45 above- sorry, doesn't mean to snotty)?

It's not for this 66 (and soon 67) year old either!

We traveled with a tour group in middle east. Great people. Spent 40 days together, days and night. Loved most of the fellows.

My first trip abroad was with a group, a Nile cruise in Egypt...
We soon knew it would be our last trip in a group. You are 'forced' to spend most of the day with the same people, the fact if you like them of not is of no importance. You're sticked to a fixed schedule, you everywhere show up with a group, so you attract those stupid souvenir sellers, you always have to wait for the same people, and I can go on like this for a while...

And it's not for this lady either. And no, I ain't saying how old I am either!

Once, and only once, did I do a bus tour and I vowed I'd never do another. Travel all day, sit on the bus, get off the bus, back on the bus, not enough time to see things etc. Most of the people were a bit older than me and they were the most boring lot of people I'd ever met. I travel on public transport, stay in dorms and get along much better with backpackers who are my children's ages. They're fun. (Most) people my age are not - they're just plain boring.

I have done group and solo travel abroad, both for work and leisure. Once in Africa (I went to see the total solar eclipse in 2001) a friend of mine and his partner asked if they could join me on the trip. Me and him had been friends for many years. He was OK on the trip, but 'She' oh dear - what a dictator. 'Lunch must be at 1, supper at 8, we must be here (it is beginning to sound like what Agus XIII sadly tells), we can't stay at that hotel, I'll cook supper tonight (and whether I liked her cooking or not, I daren't not eat it), oh it went on for a month. After about week 3 I sat at the bar with them one night and after a few beers and listening to her going on about tomorrow's plans - I snapped.
The story is much longer, but I'll just finish by saying we had a 14 hour non-stop flight back and sat at different ends of the 747 to avoid each other. After that - I never contacted my friend again. A long term friendship in tatters, all because of one person.
On the other hand, I've done other trips many times with different friends that I've known for years and it's been fine.
Personally though, I prefer to travel alone. Get up and go to bed when I like, eat and drink what I like - when I like etc.
It's good to meet up with someone who speaks the same native tongue when you've not heard it spoken for awhile, but it's not a necessity. The place I like meeting up most is on a train. Someone will get on that's going your way and you can strike up a chat for a few hours or even an overnight, then usually that's it. If you want to stay in touch, it's easily done. Otherwise just say.. 'Nice meeting you, enjoy your adventure', then walk away.
