What to do on Crete?

It seems I happen to be on Crete in early May. I'll be on vacations with my friends who are more likely to sleep at the hotel through the whole ten days... But I still hope to have a chance to travel all around even if by myself.
So I'll appreciate any suggestions and advices on where to go and what to do on Crete. I'll be based in Heraklion region so I'll plan to make rather a 1-day trips on the island. And definitely I'll take the ferry to Santorini for 2-3 days.
Don't want to stick to the exact plan so btw is it necessary to buy the ferry tickets in advance or I can do it at the place?
Is Athens worth of a night-ferry trip there from Crete or I should leave it for my next trips to Greece?
Any other recommendations?

Hi Galka, if you are into walking have a look at the Samaria Gorge, not sure if it will be open in May, but must be the best time to walk the Gorge in the Spring. Walked it a few years ago with my wife, it was a long day as we were staying at the other end of the island to the Gorge, and remember having to get out of bed around 5am to catch the bus, but it was well worth the effort, cheers

Crete is about 155 miles long and over 30 miles at it's widest, so even with a car a fair drive to get around. Not much in the way of beaches and towns are separated by a fair distance. Heraklion of course has the temple of Knossus, and a museum up the hill. Rethymnon has lots of little shops and a harbour where people sit at one of it's many cafes and watch life go by. Chania old town is nice to walk around. Has a museum, fort, a beach and of course, the gorge. Aradania has bungee jumping from the bridge. Elounda has a tiny beach and a small island that used to be a leper colony. Agios Nikolaos has a tiny museum.

As to Athens, lots of trouble there at present over this euro thing and threatened austerity measures. It's a fair sized town and you may not even know if a demo does go on elsewhere, but if you get caught up in it, you certainly will. The Greek police are tough.
