Traveling without guide in Algeria

Hi everybody! My boyfriend and I are going to Algeria for a month in summer. We wanted to get to Tamanrasset in the south by bus (we don`t have a lot of money, and we want to avoid the plane as much as possible). We don`t like arranged trips and guides, and we would like to it on our own. Does anybody know if it's possible? According to the Lonely Planet, it's not legal in Algeria to do so, so we would like to avoid doing illegal stuff

Legal or not, I don't know - but I've done Algeria without a guide and nobody arrested, nor even questioned me.
It is a huge country (one of Africa's largest) of near on a million square miles. It might be wise to get some form of guidance if you intend to do much of it.

Where have you been exactly. I intend to go to Tamanrasset and Djanet(if possible). After, my plan is to take a plane back to Alger from Tamanrasset, because I would like to visite the northern part as well. Where have you been exactly in Algeria, and how? Thanks a lot in advance!
