blondlaw, Sydney is a great city to get started out in! If it's one of your first big trips alone, I'd probably splurge on one of the bigger, more fancy hostels like the or , which are both right next to central station. Great for the first few days to get settled, and both have bars which are good for meeting others.
Yes money, take that, pretty handy stuff.
