Internet bidding sites are the way to go-October is low season and you should be able to score a real deal-go for anything downtown.
BTW-Trail BC is an consummate dump-be prepared to be underwhelmed.
I don't suppose you could mention these bidding sites you mentioned by chance...please?
Trail is fine for us. We were only there last year in September visiting my family. We are well aware it isn't a tourist destination. My family live there and that is what makes it beautiful to me.

I've stayed at the St CLair (youth hostel stylee) and the Granville Grand which was the closest thing to a hotel I stayed at in BC. It was nice, though a little noisy from the bar below in the evening, but those are my two recommendations for sure :-)
