Backpack for Aus

Im going to Australia for 12 months next month. It is my first time travelling and never had a backpack before.
I have been reading differents forum posts and everyone seems to say that you should buy a smaller backpack.
What would be a good size pack for a 12 month trip? I was thinking 50L or so.
I wont be hiking or anything like that, more carrying from town to town and accomodation to accomodation.
Also i dont know which brands are the best and im not really looking to spend a fortune on one as id rather spend my money whilst im over there.
Any tips on good backpacks would be appreciated
thanks

personnel experience Macpac are great.
Comfy and strong as.
Size wise, you really need to try them on, depending on your size, height and strength.
the fact that your not intending on doing any hiking dictate the shape a bit and the fact you'll probably be able to pick one that opens up like a suitcase (rather than a top feeder).
You need to have an idea of what kit and clothes your going to take also.
Try them on is the best advice, and make sure you get one that is comfortable, as there is no easier way of getting pack or shoulder pain by lugging a load on your back.
