Ideas for destination for first time traveller

Hey!
I'm hoping to travel to Australia next year but I thought it might make sense to do a week or two somewhere to get the taste for travelling and see if I'm actually going to love it as much as I hope. I was just after a bit of advice regarding a friendly place to go that will give me
Chance to build confidence before a big trip.
My budget is around £6-700.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I would suggest somewhere in Eastern Europe, away from the tourist traps (ie - Prague, Budapest, Krakow, Sunny Beach etc.).
Get a budget flight to perhaps Estonia, Romainia, Poland or Montenegro, then a bus into the nearest city, check in to a 1* hotel for just a night and explore the following day. If you like what you see, then book a 2nd night if you had a good sleep free of cockroaches. If you don't like the place, get to the nearest railway station and move on for a few hours. After a week - 10 days, you'll know how you feel about travelling around strange countries with vastly different cultures at each border, diverse food (as long as you stay away from BK, KFC etc.) and so much more.
If you liked all that you experienced, then learn from it - and get ready for a long haul. If you didn't like it, then you've not wasted all your hard earned cash.
