If I didn't travel with my laptop and didn't want to shell out for numerous memory cards my tactic would probably be roughly as follows:
- transfer all photos to a backup like the one Yvekes links to
- upload the very best in full resolution somewhere online in case all my luggage is stolen. Obviously personally I'd recommend Travellerspoint. If you run out of storage, we'll add some GB for every hostel you book here
- keep the photos as long as possible on the memory card as well
One benefit of this strategy is it makes you immediately choose which are your best photos. That comes in handy when you get home in terms of not having to start sifting through 10 000 photos just to decide which you want to print!

I've looked into the HyperDrive - they look awesome but are a bit out of my price range and also quite difficult to get in the UK. Thinking of getting the Nexto Extreme ND2700 which has some good reviews and is a bit cheaper...
If anyone has any thoughts on the Nexto let me know!

I'm a photographer myself and love to travel. I upload my pictures onto my external hard drive and keep it seperate from my camera, but either on me or in a safe place. another back up is www.photobucket.com ...you can create an account and save your photos online, and it keeps them the original size for formating and editing back home. good luck.

I've been thinking about this myself. I would rather my photo's were somewhere completely different to wherever I am, if stuff gets stolen/lost I don't think I could bear losing all the memories.
Has anyone looked into Dropbox?
I've signed up for a free account, but I doubt 2gb is going to get me very far, so I'm seriously considering paying the £63 50gb storage for a year.
That way I can put the photos in the folder, have it automatically sync them to my home computer, and if the account gets full up I can just have a family member move the files directly to the hard drive.
Just a thought.

I love Dropbox, but it has some downsides for most travelling. For starters you'd need someone to be opening the computer at home to get the syncing working. Sounds like that wouldn't be a problem for you, but for others it could be. It's also harder to share the photos through dropbox in comparison to something like flickr/travellerspoint in my experience (as these sites are more for viewing and dropbox more for storage, even though they all also do the other). But I really love how easy/fast syncing is with dropbox, so it can work well!
FWIW, you have 5GB of free storage here on TP, and we have been considering the option of giving users more space for contributions/hostel bookings/forum posts/maybe even payment etc. Out of curiousity/in the name of market research, would that be the kind of thing you'd be interested in?

I will look into it a little later, but if I don't work it out before then, is the storage purely for JPEGS?
Reason being, my camera shoots RAW, and I'd like to keep these files safe. So sure I'd be interested in storing my images on here, even at a *competitive* cost, if the UI is easy to navigate and the system works.
