Well, I think with 7 weeks at first to the Santiago to Lima trip it's better to focus on Argentina on that part of your travels.
Going back it's better to take the Panamerican highway and visit places along the way, like Valparaiso, La Serena and Arica and also in Peru a few places like Arequipa. In total directly a bus would take anything from 36 hours to 50 hours or so, so you will have a day or so in a few places.
