There are a few free/cheap campsites along the east coast, there's a few books around that outline them - the main one is called "Camps Australia Wide" which I've used and found it quite helpful. Unfortunately most places right on the beach or near the beach you will have to pay for. If you're bringing a GPS with you, provides POIs for camps QLD and camps NSW which are usually free/cheap places to camp.
Are you heading north or south from Brisbane?

We are going to be heading north to Cairns and then work our way back down so we end up in Sydney for xmas and new year.
Do you think 6 weeks sounds the right amount of time with out being to rushed?

Do you mean actual working or travel?
6 weeks should be good for the trip, you won't be too rushed.
