If it's warm weather, try Phoenix.
If it's cold weather, consider Santa Fe, New Mexico. Not inexpensive, but gorgeous around Christmas. You can also save money by staying in Albuquerque and driving in.
I suggest Levenworth, Washington--and attend one of the weekend Christmas Lighting Festivals (all Christmas long)

It's fairly close to Montana (so you're family can get there)--and it's not far from Seattle if you fly there for an extended weekend to celebrate Christmas early.
Also, the cost if reasonable compared to more elaborate Christmas destinations like New York City, Aspen, Sun Valley, or Jackson (Wyoming)

I would think someplace mid-way such as Minnesota, Wisconsin or the Upper Peninsula of Michigan would fit the bill. I like snow for Xmas, and that's where you'd find it, and I would think Midwestern prices would also be pretty low vs a resort in the Rockies. Look for a winter sports area near Green Bay or Duluth. This country can be pretty expensive in the more popular areas and holidays are not known for bargain prices. Maybe rent a car and tour the 10,000 frozen lakes of Minnesota?

The Christmas Lighting Festival in Levenworth sounds awesome, but we actually just met in Seattle over the summer for a short vacation, so my parents nixed that one.
My brother put in a vote for Phoenix, and since nobody else was throwing out ideas, I talked him into splitting time between Flagstaff and Phoenix. Snow for me, warm weather (cactus???) for him!
