heya laura, there are loads of us on this site that are heading out to aus, most of us are all first time travellers and going alone.
im in the same boat as you, ive always wanted to go but kept on putting it off, and now im at the stage where if i dont do it now im never gonna do it..so im doing it lol....your obviously gonna be traveeling alone but i dont think youll ever get lonely as such out there, your always gonna be around pple.
yeah would be cool to hang out, i reckon i'll still be in sydney in jan time.

Been there!! I went off to Oz on my own in 2006 and I was sooo scared, you get there and realise everyone is in the same boat its impossible not to make friends and sometimes you will even crave time on your own!!
The friendships you make are intense I'm still in touch with most of the people i met whilst travelling and am now in New Zealand doing it all again although this time im dragging my boyfriend along!

Hey I'm in the same boat too..handed in my 8 week notice this week and am freaking out. Have got a good job that i love but have to do this now before i'm responsible for anything, i've got an itch i have to scratch. I have never been away alone either, i'm not even very good at enjoying my own company. My plan is to start in Melbourne in Jan and then get to Sydney for mardi gras on march 5th before heading north up the east coast to follow the sun, over the top and back down the west coast. Am only planning things as they come along after March, don't want to restrict myself at all x x x

i think alot of us seem to have that same itch, its pretty cool at the amount of us that are going around the same time as each other, im sure alot of our paths are gonna cross along the way too. would be good to meet up with pple once we are out there, compare plans and experiances and such.

When I was 30 I travelled around Europe for 6 months by myself and yes I was apprehensive as it was the first time I had travelled abroad by myself. I did as much research (transport, accom., sightseeing) as I could which proved beneficial as it made me feel more confident. These days (I'm 54 now) I travel to Asia for a month each year and still happy to take off and visit new places by myself eg Laos this year, Cambodia 2 years ago. I have researched and put together itineraries for Vietnam and the Phillipines to suit myself as I will be travelling solo when I get there (one day with luck). There is so much info on the internet these days.
As far as Oz goes, being a solo female, do not hitch hike, because like any country your an open target. Give some thought as to what route you take because Oz is a big country so doubling back is not recommended. In regard to where you visit comes down to what your interests are. No doubt the east coast (Sydney, Gold Coast, Cairns (Great Barrier Reef), Port Douglas (Daintree Rainforest) will be on your itinerary but any destinations to the west are as I said subject to your interests and time availability. For long trips consider flying (see Jetstar or Virgin websites) as one way fares are pretty cheap these days. Hope you enjor your visit.
You've made an excellent choice to go travelling by picking Australia. If you were creating the perfect country to do your 'apprenticeship of backpacking' then Australia is it.
It's definitely the easiest place in the world to meet other people. In fact if you fancy a few days to yourself at any stage you'll probably find it hard not to meet people. The first time I went I was there for three months and only had two days on my own (and that was when I purposely went inland to a non-backpackery town just cos I needed a relaxing break).
And on top of that the added bonus is that because the vast majority of the places to see are around the coast it means everyone is basically going clockwise or anti-clockwise, so half of the people you meet will be heading the same route as you so you'll generally end up travelling with other backpackers and keep bumping into familiar faces on your travels.
Thanks for all your replys I feel so much better really i do!!! Im more excited then nervous now, infact im only feeling nervous about the flight right now haha. I cant wait to get out there! i really want to hand my notice in at work now! But i have to wait until December!! Seems so far away x
