Lone Traveller in NYC!

Hello all

First of all, don't worry!! I spent 2 months in NYC on my own as my first proper solo trip. I was 24 at the time too. And I can honestly say I felt safer there than I do in London, or even my home town sometimes! The vast majority of Manhattan is so easy to navigate, and if you lose your way, just go into a store and ask an employee for directions, or go for a coffee and check out your map.
As with any big city, just use your common sense. There are usually so many people about at night in the main areas so you feel safe. For my first couple of nights I was nervous to go out alone, but after that I just decided to be brave but streetwise. I felt fine riding the subway on my own after dark once I got used to it (including after a broadway show!) You don't have to always BE confident to LOOK confident.
I stayed at the HI on Amsterdam Ave, prob not central enough for you, but it was a great place for meeting people. And it was felt very safe.

Don't bother with any of those tours, just do it yourself!

Fantastic Tracy! really appreciate that advice thank you, feel much better now yeah you're right about the tours, it's much better to just do it yourself! 2 months in nyc? wow im sure that was a brilliant experience. I'll take a look at the hostel that you mentioned anywho! thanks again x

First of all I would highly recommend any HI, I love them! Having said that when I was in NYC this winter we stayed in this hostel on the upper west side, about half a block from Central Park. I don't know that it is really "central" but it was half a block from the subway and that made it pretty convenient. It is a converted brownstone and honestly was a little shady lol but we ended up meeting some great people there.

I 100% second what tracy said, NYC is very safe, you just need to use your common sense. Don't whip out your city map while waiting for the train at night lol. I found it very handy to have the NYC city map on my iPhone while I was there, it made me look less like a tourist and more like an unaware New Yorker.

One thing I would suggest is on the first day you are there try to take one of the bus tours of the city. It is a great way to get a visual overview of NYC and get an idea of what you want to see and where you want to go. Its a good starting point.

Your best resource is probably going to be at the Hostel though. I would talk to the front desk and as many people around you as possible and find out what they have seen and done.

Since you aren't going for a while, start looking online for discount Broadway tickets, you can usually find some for a good deal. And I also highly suggest buying an unlimited Subway ticket, I think you can buy them at 1, 3, 7 and 30 days increments and are sooooooo much cheaper then paying each time.

You can also check out the NY city pass online, depending on what your interests are and what you would like to see its a pretty good deal.

Do your research though and try to plan as much as you can because there are a BAZILLION things to do in NYC. Bleeker street pizza = best pizza in NYC. If you are in to poetry or spoken word the Bowery Poetry Club is a great place to see it. And of course there is Ground Zero, but make sure you check out the museum built by the families of those who perished, it is absolutely amazing!

I am pretty jealous lol I want to go back! Have fun!

awesome!! thanks also for that advice, i will defo check all that out! really appreciated!
