I'd try Soi Rambuttri - it's just a couple of blocks from Ko San Road but is nicer in my opinion. There are loads of budget accommodation options there as well as places to eat and second-hand book stalls. I stayed at 2 places along there - Bella Bella and My House, both of which were fine.

Khao San Road is not the only place you can find budget hotels. You should mention the price you want to spend on a room so you get suggestions in your price range.

On Sukhumvit Road not far from the Nana Skytrain stop you will find hotels in all price ranges. Here is a link to a place you can head for temporarily if you arrive late. Soi One Guest House.
(Unless you want a more expensive place.)

In this Sukhumvit Road area you have malls, street vendors, nightlife, good restaurants and best of all access to the Skytrain. The Skytrain can take you to Chatuchak, MBK, Patpong, Ekamai bus terminal and connect with the subway at Asok and the new Rail Link at Phaya Thai. The subway connects with the national train station and even the Rail Link at Makkasan.

i hope your new destination will give you a deeper meaning in life.
