From San Ignacio we want to see Tikal and spend a few days in Flores. Would it be better to go straight to Tikal visit the ruins and head onto Flores and relax there for 2 or 3 nights or head straight to Flores and check in somewhere for 2 or 3nights and take a day trip to see the ruins at Tikal?
You can do both at the same time. From the Cayo, go to Flores...Get the hotel, and then, in the morning, take the bus to Tikal. Staying up at Tikal, to me, is not worth it. There's really nothing there but a couple of hotels and Tikal. Flores, you get to walk around and daytrip to Tikal, twice if you want.....

It depends. Flores is a strange little island of nothing but hotels, with a church at the top.....The first time I was there, I climbed to the top and saw a man give his automatic 9mm to his son to play with. I thought that was weird. Santa Elena is rough hewn, and there ain't much there, except to buy regular sundries cheap....EXCEPT!....and no on does this. You can take a lancha across to the lovely town of San Andres. It's a nice town and it's a nice walk down to the other town down the road.....whose name I forget.
But if you think you're going to only spend time in Flores, yes. Two days at best.....But go off the rails and look at the other stuff.....
There is NO hassle getting to Flores. It's THE place to go when you want to go to Tikal. You'll like the place, I guarantee it. I really wouldn't stay up at Tikal. It's dull there.
Can you get to Tikal from San Ignacio early enough to enjoy it in early morning as described? is so we could just catch a bus to Flores after.
Sure. I suppose....Wouldn't you, then, be carrying your packs or bags or rollie suitcases with you? There's not tried and true place to put these things....and Tikal is a BIG site.
