Hi everyone! Has anyone tried one of those shower & lounge in hong kong airport? My mother who is 70 years old will transit by herself in Hong Kong from London to Sydney to visit family. So I was thinking of getting her access to one of those lounges since its about a 12-hour layover. Also, any service in hong kong airport which is able to assist my mom for her transit? Any insider tips on this would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Hi, I haven't tried one in Hong Kong, but the Singapore airport has a similar thing where you check into a room of your own and have a shower and a bed to sleep in. Basically a very small hotel room. I've done it once when we had a long layover there and it was brilliant. I cannot recommend it enough!! You feel so much more rested at the other end. She should definitely do it!
I had access to the Cathay Pacific lounge in Hong Kong on one of my trips through there last year. If you mean the showers there, then she should be aware that there can be quite long waits for the showers there. I think I waited a solid hour and a half, and still having not gotten a spot, decided to skip it (was running out of time). Otherwise, the chairs there are pretty comfy, and their noodle section especially is very good
Oh I see, it's not really the same as Singapore's one then. In Singapore it's more like a tiny hotel inside the terminal (so you don't have to go through customs). It has a bed to sleep on and everything. That's actually the part that is so cool.
In that case, I'd suggest for her to look into booking into an airport hotel at HK. It will set you back a bit more, but really, it's a small price to pay for rest on a long trip like that. I'm not sure if there are many options for hotels at the airport, but the is the one I found after a quick search and it's connected to the terminal. She will have to go through immigration to get to it. I'd say that's worth it for a 12 hour layover.
Travellers lounge is ok - very nice clean facility a LONG way to one side of the airport. You are definitely right to get assistance sorted out in advance!
I've used both the showers and the rest spaces on recent journeys and you may like to let your mother know this:
The rest spaces are classy cubicles rather than self contained rooms. Perfectly nice, clean and minimalist but there is a person in the next cubicle also trying to rest. People come and go - very quietly but they do still come and go. If you are prepared for it it's probably not a big deal but if not, it can disturb your rest. They are in a special area - you are not out in the airport but in one of the lounge areas that have a receptionist and restricted access and they are comfortable but they are not like the hotels in SGA which are proper bedrooms.
I would always recommend to any person to use the shower facilities on a long haul flight and, though they are significantly more expensive in HK than SGA for no obvious reason, the facilities HK provide are great. Our last trip at Xmas we had two older women (one 70+) and we all had showers and no one had any complaints at all.

Thanks for the tips TravelMC. I'll definitely tell mom about what she should expect. Mom is still quite strong but I might also consider getting her a wheelchair service from the airline, since you said that its quite a walk. She would probably hate it, but as I see during my travels, wheelchair passengers get the fast lanes and everything. Thank you. My work here is almost done. Thanks to everyone's input.
