visa issue!!

Hey guys, i'm having a few issues trying to work out some technicalities with my visa. So i have a working holiday visa for France, as i will be working and staying with a family from April to August of this year. However, i'll be flying from Melbourne to Frankfurt initially, as some of my family live in Germany, and they are happy to drive me to France after a week or so to begin my job. Things start to get complicated because my friend will be flying over to join me in August after i finish my work in France, and we are travelling around the rest of Europe until the end of the year as tourists.

You have a working holiday visa for France - correct? How long is this valid for? If this visa is valid for the whole time of your stay until you fly back to Australia you won't have any problems.

Your initial stay in Germany will be covered by the visa-free tourist thingie and after you start working in France your one-year working holiday visa should kick in.

For your friend it will be more difficult though. There 90 days inside Schengen will be the max for hir. So Aug (31 days), Sept (30 days), Oct (31 days) - 92 days. Depending upon the exact date of entry in August you need to leave by the end of Oct/ early Nov.

My recommendation would be to go down to Morocco or other North-African countries and check them out if you really want to travel in the region until late Dec (or if your flight is out of Paris this late). Time outside Schengen Area is not counted.

You could split your time: 70-80 days inside initially until sometime in Oct, then down through Morocco, Turkey, etc and then back into Schengen Area for another 10-20 days before you fly home.

Thanks so much for your reply, this visa stuff is ridiculous!!

My french visa is valid for 12 months, but i will only be in France til August, however from what i understand i can utulise it to visit the other schengen countries until i leave- which will be within the 12 months.

I think we've planned to head to the UK and Ireland at the start of November, so i suppose we will just have to ensure we get there before her visa expires, with time to return to Paris before we leave. I definetly think we are going to have to change our itinerary to avoid having visa issues though!!

If your friend is Aussie too s/he could just get a Working Holiday visa for one of the Schengen countries...

Or check whether s/he might have inherited EU citizenship somehow, this would also sort out your problems quite nicely.
