hey everyone im just about to book up my flights to oz new zeland then bangkok but im having second thoughts on which way to do it. do you think i should start of in cairns and head down to sydney for xmas then make my way over to perth or start off at perth get to sydney for xmas then make my way up to cairns? im going end of august i was just wondering what is most populour way to do it this time of year.
Given that timeframe, definitely start up north in Cairns, as August is a great time to be there, and you'll want to be as far south as possible come late November (due to the wet season starting up north, which basically runs from December through March (you might've heard something about floods and cyclones this year?), and has rather unpleasant humidity for a while before it really starts).
Also, Perth in August is rather deserted. Don't know if it's any better in summer, but I suspect it must be, for otherwise I wouldn't know why so many people like it so much.

I agree with Sander, you'll want to start in Cairns, make your way to Sydney and then over to Perth. While you're in Perth, make sure you visit Rottnest Island and travel a bit of the south coast - it's very beautiful! How long are you staying in Australia for?
