We wanted to travel to thailand awhile back because my father was stationed there during Vietnam. Our major concern was finding a place to stay. After all, the accommodation in thailand was different from what we would see in the United States.
It's impressive you saw them on this site, as both threads mentioning them before have been deleted as spam.

In Thailand you can find hotels and hostels from around 400 baht to 700 baht. Some cities a hotel with A/C, hot water, TV, private toilet and shower starts at 500 or 600 baht per night.
You can find places where tourists stay with local families but it won't be like staying overnight at a friends house back home. Thailand has summertime type weather all year long. Not every private home has A/C. Some homeowners are content with cold water (really tepid) and squat toilets. Big families mean many people using the same toilet.
Anyone planning to do a homestay or get other accommodation should plan a budget out and see how much you can afford per night for a hotel or hostel. Posters on this forum can recommend hotels that fit your budget.
Thailand is very tourist friendly. You will be able to find food you can eat, Bangkok may be safer than the city you are living in now. Transportation is efficient and cheap. Over 15 million tourists visited last year most were very satisfied in one way or another. Thailand is easier to visit for a first timer than other countries in that area. Many of these tourists were backpackers living in cheap hostels and guest houses cheaper than homestays.
You can also learn about culture and history from a travel guide for free if you get it from a library! And without any phony discount vouchers too!

Suppose they do work but in the end you still pay much more than staying in a simple hotel - was it really worth it in the end? This "good deal" $70 voucher could be off something that is possibly overpriced by $70.
You sound hooked on this method - so do it!
I don't particularly want to share toilets with total strangers or sleep among them even if the price was a bargain! If someone likes sharing sleeping among strangers and sharing toilets they can do it in a cheap hostel! Hostels and hotels also share local history and have tourist handouts.
When you choose a hotel, even a cheap one, you also can choose one in an area where more things are available that tourists usually want. Things you can walk to like restaurants, malls, street vendors, supermarkets, inexpensive transportation and even availability of cheap tours or entertainment. A hotel is a known entity with a track record - good or bad!
Always do the math first! Break any costs down to how much per day and then compare that to what you can get on your own. In the off season almost all of the hotels are discounted in Thailand anyway!. Tours are easy to sign up for from local travel agencies usually cheaper than when purchased from a source outside Thailand even with a discount. There is no problem purchasing plane rides in Thailand even on short notice. Bus rides and train service are cheap and efficient.
Of course there are always exceptions. Do you feel lucky?
When you stay in a hostel, you get to meet travelers, they think and breathe like travelers.
If you are only staying in Thailand for 2 weeks or less, I think it's better to be independent. Unless you really can't afford.

You are paying in Baht not Pounds or Yen, and Thailand has so many affordable hostels and hotels.
I stayed someplace for 100-120 baht in 2008. I hope things haven't changed with the rates.
It's a room... don't ask me where, coz I'm visiting again, and I want make sure, they have enough rooms, LOL.
