My wife and I are heading to Myanmar for a couple of days in September. It's only a short stay and we want to see either Bagan or Mandalay. Does anyone have recommendations on which is the best of the two places to visit?

I would choose Bagan - the temples there are amazing and you could easily fill a few days visiting them. We hired a man with a horse and cart for 2 days which is a great way to get around. We didn't really see many other tourists and it was fantastic.
Mandalay is ok but there isn't that much to see in the city itself; the main reason to go there is to visit the surrounding ancient cites. They make an interesting day trip and you could fill the other day in Mandalay, visiting Mandalay Hill and the Palace, but for me Bagan was the more worthwhile of the 2 places.

Thanks for the information. From reading around it does seem that Bagan is probably the best option. The horse and cart idea sounds interesting, may have to check it out!

I would go with Bagan too! Everyone has heard of Angkor Wat but not that may foreigners have even heard of Bagan! Former name Pagan! Squeeze in some time for Mt. Popa.
One hotel I used many years ago was the Yar Kinn Thar Hotel. Anawrahta Road.

I would say BAGAN is the best option plus one day trip to Mont Popa. Be carefully with the monkeys.
