Best area to stay (French Quarter). Best coffee--Cafe du Monde down near the French Market which is just a short ways southeast of the French Quarter is considered the best--but there are many excellent ones nearby. Be sure to get your coffee with an order of beignets also. Best live music - is just a short ways north of Jackson Square and also right on Bourbon Street itself (which has jazz spots all up and down the street all night long).
Be sure to have a meal at K-Paul's (my preference--great cajun food) or Commanders Palace (highly rated also) if you can afford it--and also tour the beautiful plantations outside of town as you head towards Baton Rouge.
