are we really unorganized or this how everyone is.....

Hello.

Which guide book are you using?

Cheers,
Terry

I didn't end up out at that end of Auz but thats pretty much how I did it! I flew into Perth, WA at midnight and luckily had a night at a hostel booked. Once you get there, you'll meet so many other traveller's and also the hostel staff who all have loads of information and ideas. Melbourne is supposed to be an awesome city, bummed I didn't get there. SO, don't worry, I personally think it's more exciting when you don't have everything all scheduled and sussed out. Just go with the flow! Booking a hostel for the first night or so isn't a bad idea though

Hi Terry, We are using the rough guide to Australia, east Coast. We have since Booked 2 nights in a Hostel in St Kilda, Pint on Punt, anyone been? seems super simple to get from the airport to the hostel so made up about that. I know it will be easy when we are there to get advice just want to be a little less nieve then we are.
Thanks for your replies

Remember that you're not going to Africa, the Indian Subcontinent or somewhere in Asia that is completely and utterly foreign to you.

You're going to a developed, modern western country where everyone speaks English and listens to much the same music that you do, sees the same movies, eats the same food, etc. Australia is in no way exotic or intimidating, it's just different enough that it'll be really fun and interesting.

Bottom line: Australia is SUPER easy to navigate.

Relax. Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

There are plenty of hostels in Melbourne. And if you want to spend a little more, I recently stayed in Melbourne for 60 per night/person on Little Burke st at the BreakFree. It is an apartment style place so you can cook your own meals which can be handy.

I stayed in quite a flashy a hostel in St Kilda called Habitat HQ. We had to get the tram from the centre of the city and walk quite a way down the main street once at St Kilda, but like other's have said, Australia is a really easy place to navigate because you can always just ask for directions and help.

Once we arrived there was a bulliten board with part-time jobs aimed specifically at hostel dwellers, so you'll be able to find something I'm sure, and I don't think many people go out with a 'travellers job' lined up or anything.

Other than that, you should have a chippie on St Kilda beach at sunset - really nice
