That's a really interesting question. I went searching around on the internet and I don't see any records of non Malay Muslims falling under the Khalwat or Sharia laws. I think being non Malay is key. As a visitor you are afforded more leeway. If you are really worried about it, you could stay at one of the backpacker type accommodations around Chinatown or over in Bukit Bintang. Most have private rooms and would not question your marital status. I've certainly never heard of those places being raided!

The more time goes by the more radical this country is getting. Not being a Malaysian does not mean you are immune from the "Religious Police" making an accusation and acting on that charge.

Foreigners have been bothered by Malaysian Religious Police. Not just raids on churches and nightclubs.
