I've been told by a few different sources that going for the one way flight is the best bet. It gives you the freedom to fly from anywhere and at any time. Its what I'm doin. Just check the average price of flights at around the time you are planning on going home and when it comes to the time they aren't gonna be much more than that. Keep a couple hundred more than you think you'll need just in case unless you have a way of getting more money while you're out there (family, friends, etc).

An open-ended ticket is basically full fare economy class - in other words - EXPENSIVE AS HELL!
I think a one-way would be cheaper. You should check to see if AU Immigration would let you in with this or not???

This question comes up quite often, because technically the airline requires you show proof of onward travel when you check in for your flight, from almost every country these days it seems and they can refuse to let you on the plane.
In regards to Australian immigration, it seems to be a hot item and they almost always ask to see evidence of onward travel for anyone with a tourist visa or eta (visa exemption). So what to do? You don't have to have a ticket back to your home country, you only need a ticket out of the country. So you could buy a refundable ticket to New Zealand which would be cheapest and then cancel it once you are in the country. They still charge you $50 for this. Or you could buy your ticket back to the UK with a date on it and then pay the charge for changing the date. You'd have to check to see which would be cheaper.

They don't exist anymore. If you purchase a return ticket you must provide a return date. Some airlines, such as Qantas, will give you 1x date change free of charge.

Thank you all for replying! I should have plenty of money left over from NZ for a return journey, so I'm tempted to just leave the return home ticket until I actually know when I'm coming home, and let them check my funds if needs be instead. Scary, I just don't want to be turned away, lol!
