Hi, after finding out the pumpkins and melons don't come into season in may : ( i have had to think again about my trip. Now going to arrive in Sydney mid April stay there a week and then travel up the coast in search of work on the farms as it seems to be peak season for fruit picking.
By all means take a driving licence with you but don't get a vehicle unless you need one.
They are cheap because they are fuel guzzlers. I would not plan on sleeping in one.
Australia is huge, do a little research and look into the economy of a falcon and then calculate how much petrol you'd get through just for a trip from Brisbane to Cairns. It adds up fast, then all the expenses for registering and maintenance of the vehicle.
If you can hook up with some other people to share the expenses and sleep in a tent, this might be your best option and loads of other people are doing the same around Australia.
Look into work in northern Queensland. The farms are always needing works because there is a growing season all year for one or more of the crops up that way.
Thanks for advice, decided were (me and girlfriend) going to start of without car as flights from Sydney to Townsville are cheap, from there can catch bus to surrounding towns and hopefully find work. Then if we save enough money and get second year visa can think more about buying car.
I have been researching harvest towns like Ayr, Bowen, BUnderburge and Tully. Seems like i'm just going round in circle reading reviews on working hostels. Managed to find a couple of places in Tully offering accommodation and work on the banana farms which seem to pay well. So i planning on heading there first then if no work after week or two head down coast on the buses untill hopefully we find work and get our second visa.
Sound like a good plan?
A big part of getting work is going to be just luck, being in the right place at the right time. Just be careful of some of the places. I'd heard that some pay really well, but then charge a fortune for accommodation and food that can only be got at the farm shop.
