New Year 2014 - Oz and beyond

Hi guys,

Hey Ben

I'm in the same situation.. finally got a career going and now decided to go travelling but if I don't do it now I'll only regret it!! I'm planning on going to SE Asia in November then Australia in January. How long are you planning on going for? I started looking at sta travel for ideas and good old google!! There is quite a few threads on here about the cost which you can find but in Australia I've read you need at least £1000 per month. Are you planning on working in Australia? And when are you going?!

Jen x

Cheers for the reply Jen. I've done the same with STA and Google! I've no concrete plans as it is a relatively new idea! It's just something that I feel I wonder a lot about so why not just do it?! Even if it is only for 6 months! I've seen that £1000 mark which is probably a little more than I thought but I'd like to do a bit of work out there perhaps - to help sustain myself a little! I've set myself a target of January so it's all about seeing how much I could save per month at the minute. Are you going on your own?

Yeah just do it!! :-)
I've met a few people on here and gapyear.com so flying out with them! Yeah i didn't expect it to be £1000 per month either! But I'm working while I'm there so that should keep me going!!
Are you quitting your job or will they allow you to take a career break?

Definitely go for it. I went travelling for the first time at the age of 30 in 2009 and was away for 18 months. It was the best 18 months of my life and I definitely want to go away again.

I would say £1,000 a month minimum in Australia and that will be living as simply and frugally as possibly and not having many big nights out and rarely eating out. South-East Asia is of course much cheaper, and was for me a much more rewarding and enjoyable place to travel.

New Zealand is lovely and I enjoyed it much more than Australia to travel so make sure you go there too. It is also slightly cheaper.

Cheers, guys! I best get saving then, eh?! I think I might be perhaps going with a friend now too but not 100% sure and we might go our separate ways depending where we want to go. Appreciate your advice though and I'm well up for it!

Oh, and how easy is it to find work while you're out there?
