I'm stopping off in LA for 4 days on my way to Canada and just wondered if anyone can suggest any must see attractions / things to do while im there?? Also any information on places to stay would be great?
It depends on what you like to do.
LA county: Universal Studio (movie making), Hollywood (strolling), Beverly Hills (home of celebrities and celebrity poseurs), Santa Monica/Malibu (beach towns), Getty Museum
Orange County: about 1 hour south of LA is Orange County, home of Disneyland (Anaheim), Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) from Huntington Beach to San Clemente (a series of really nice beach towns).
Santa Barbara and north bound: with a rental car you can drive leisurely along PCH to Santa Barbara county and onto the central coast. PCH is gorgeous around the Big Sur area. It can be driven within 1-day from LA to Montery non-stop, so 3 days to go north and 1 day to return on the 101. It's enough time to stop/rest and enjoy the scenery along the way. It's low-season now and the weather is better during this time of year (very little fog).
So if you like tourist attractions, stay in LA/Orange County. If you like beautiful landscape/seascape, head north to the central coast. Public transportation is not like it is in the UK, so you really need a car. Be prepare for bad traffic if you hand around LA/OC.

For 4 days in LA- this is what I would recommend:
Day 1- See the Hollywood/Bev Hills sites during the day- Mann Chinese theatre, Hollywood Blvd,Rodeo Drive, Griffth Park, Melrose Shopping, and hit up a club at night. You don't want to do Hollywood more than a day or 2 but its worth it just to say you did it.
Day 2- Hit the beach towns. Venice, Santa Monica. It's the best vibe in LA, laid back fun people, and you'll find plenty of shopping areas, restaurants and bars on Main Street, and Third St. Promanade. The Venice Beach boardwalk and Santa Monica Pier is very eclectic and worth seeing. You can hang out here at night as well- cool clubs and bars and not pricey like in Hollywood.
Day 3- If you want to save a day to do an amusement park, Disneyland or Universal are good- because they are far from each other you can't do both, so pick one. If you have never been to Disneyland, I'd go there.
Day 4- If you want to do a studio tour, I recommend the Warner Brothers Studio Tour. I've lived here 8 years and have done them all, and this one is the best. It takes about 2 hours and its really cool if you want to see behind the scenes movie sets/stages etc. Then you have the rest of the day to chill and finish what you didn't see early on.

I can't add much to what the others have said about places to see, but if it is a hostel that you are wanting to stay at, USA Hostels Hollywood is a really good hostel. It is in a good location just off Hollywood Boulevard down a quite side street close to Hollywood/Highland station. It has free or cheap tours basically every day of the week. A couple of the days they have a free shuttle to Venice Beach and Santamonica Beach which is a bonus.
Seeing Universal City Walk at night after it is dark is pretty cool and a good opportunity to get some good night time photos.

Huntington Beach in Orange County. Great surfing beach and it's free.
sorry to dig this thread back up, but we are heading to LA in a few days and will be there for 4 days. We want to do Santa Monica and Hollywood as definates. Do we need a car to get around or will buses be sufficent? We are also heading to vegas after and flying out of there to san fran.
A car in LA is a must. The town is enormous (50 miles long north to south and 25 miles wide east to west).
Lived there for 30 years--and trust me, without a car you will hate this trip. With a car, it can be a lot of fun.
You can either drive to Las Vegas (5 hour drive one-way without traffic, 6 hours if there is traffic) or fly. I say fly--if you only have a few days (like 7 or so total for the trip). For those who have more time, and if the weather is good, then I say drive, because this takes you through the largest desert in the US.
In Santa Monica, visit the 4th street area and the pier. Also in that area, visit the Farmers Market, and the La Brea Tar Pits and the Getty Museum. The interesting areas in Hollwood are the Sunset Strip (Sunset Blvd) and Rodeo Drive (Beverly Hills) and shopping restaurants and TV studios. (go to a TV show if they are still filming--they are all free).
(Check out the network sites--ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX for tickets). You might end up at shows like American Idol, Hell's Kitchen, The Tonight Show, or even end up as a contestant on a game show.

This is great! I'm doing the same thing...check out my blog....when will you be in LA...I expect to be there mid January...I am from Canada so any way I can help....let me know...
