If you had to choose because of time constraints, which hill station would you rather, Dalat or Sapa, and if you could manage only one beach holiday would you choose mui ne or nha trang?
Jenny,
I see you are only 21, so I am going to guess you need a bit more excitement than older folks. DaLat and Nha Trang just have more to do than Sapa & Mui Ne. They are larger towns with more options. I met my GF in DaLat, so I am biased. DaLat has waterfalls, lakes, hill tribes close by, plenty of hotels, bars & restaurants, nightlife to choose from. Sapa basically has trekking and hill tribes. Weather is also a factor. Check locally, but Sapa could be cold & rainy when you choose to go. It is not much fun slogging around in the mud all day.
I am going to vote DaLat & NT. Others can make their pitch for Sapa & Mui Ne.
Wow, I'm really suprised to see a vote for Dalat over Sapa. Not to say that Dalat isn't a good town, but I didn't find it all that exciting. A few intersting sights to check out for sure, and some of the most memorable restarants in the country, but for me it wasn't a highlight of the country. Sapa on the other hand was a beautiful retreat for a few days. True enough there isn't too much to do in the town, but hiking to the hilltribe villages was great (better than Thailand), and the scenery was fantastic. Also, being so far and remote and right on the border with China, it had a vague frontier atmosphere to it that was a little different to the rest of Vietnam. For me Sapa was THE highlight of Vietnam.
I didn't make it to Mui Ne so I can't compare, but I really enjoyed Nha Trang. Good nightlife, fun activities during the day, like the popular boat trips, and great beaches. Though maybe Mui Ne has lots to offer too, but you sure can't go wrong with Nha Trang.
Hmmm, can't comment on Sapa as have run out of time so having to give it a miss. However, I have heard from others that it is absolutely freezing there at the moment and I have very few warm clothes packed, so... Dalat is good, but only for 2 nights max. It is set in some beautiful mountain scenery and it is well worth getting the bus as the views from the mountain roads are spectacular (I will be uploading pics soon). However, there isn't much to do there except soak up the atmosphere, visit a few palaces/temples and the lake and eat.
Mui Ne is verrrrrryyyyyyyyyy quiet. I am travelling alone and was really disappointed by the fact that there were loads of couples caught up in their own little bubble and no backpacker vibe or local atmosphere at all. The beach is ok, a bit dirty in places where the rivers run into the sea and smell rather wrong. Nha Trang is a great party place and a great place to meet people. There are a lot of tourists and expats, but you also get to mingle with locals. The beach is cool. There are hot springs, temples, a market to explore and you can dive/snorkle and do boat trips to nearby islands. So, I would recommend Nha Trang over Mui Ne if you want fun and a nice beach with a lot to do. But, if you want a deserted beach and quiet, so to the far ends of Mui Ne.

Thanks Mike, i feel old now as i would have suggested Sapa and Mui Ne. Nightlife wise there is definitely more going on in Nha Trang over Mui Ne, i just thought Mui Ne was a bit more tranquil and a better place to get away from the chaos of HCMC.
Hey,
I have been to all of the places you mention and i would suggest you go to Nha Trang and SaPa. The trekking in sapa and the rice paddies are really nice (even though it did rain for the three days i did it!). Da Lat isnt a very nice town, but it has a few tribes adn waterfalls around it although nothing on Sapa.
Nha Trang has in my opinion a better beach than Mui Ne and considerably less mosquitoes (Mui means Mosquito in vietnamese) and it is also cheaper for accomodation. I ended up spending 11 days in nha trang partying at the Sailing club/why not bar, then relaxing on the beaches or in the mud pools nearby.
Mui Ne is really small and quiet and not a lot going on, plus the accomodation will cost you at least double - sdepends what you are after in the end.
Have a good trip,
Kev
Thanks everyone,
I think Im going to go to Dalat (it just sounds a little more laid back and is less of a diversion from our route) and nha trang, its terrible if the beach at mui ne is dirty. unfortunatley some people dont clean up after themselves! and if like you say kev the accomodation in nha trang is cheaper thats a big selling point to me! of course if time permits we could always go to both beaches, you never can get enough splashing around in the waves!
Jenn xx
I was in Nha Trang in Feb this year, I had a nice time, but wondered why it was so quiet? I was expecting a party place, but there wasn't much going on. Was I there in low season? It did rain 2 of the 4 days I was there, so I did suspect it being the low season.

Laura,
I was there in Feb. as well. It was not as crowded as my March 03 trip. I think it was the weather more than anything else. Feb. should have been busy, but due to the rain, people may have moved on. Just guessing. I still went to the Cham ruins, Buddha Pagoda and bay tour. Plenty of restaurants, pool tables to choose from rain or shine. I enjoyed NT again as well.
sapa and nha trang a must!!
i hated Mu Nie!! it was the worst place i have ever visited in my whole time in SE Asia!!
I'd rather go to skegness!
