Kenya- has anyone been to see the Massai Mara?

hi,

Hi,
Masai Mara is fab! That's what I can say.

This time of the year, till the end of October there is the Great Wildebeest Migration. I was there about a month ago for just 2 days and a night. I had a beautiful experience even though I didn't get to catch the episode of the migration with the wildebeest crossing the Mara River.

I had an evening game watching drive and managed to see quite a count of lions, a huge herd or elephants and the migrating horde in the horizon among many other game; within a rainy hour. Our driver guide even spotted a cheetah but I couldn't see it coz it was raining a little too much and getting a little too dark for my eyes.

I stayed at an exclusive tented camp in the conservancy area outside the Mara Reserve. I woke up to enjoy game viewing from my deck. The next morning, I took a drive to lodge inside the reserve just to do some business. I had another wonderful gaming experience toped by another herd of elephants.

There are absolutely no regrets with the Masai Mara.

The Mara is certainly worth the trip. As for the cultural experience, some of the experiences provided by travel companies are especialy designed for tourists but you can get a more authintic experience if you visit some of the local markets at the right time. There used to be a monthly "Masia" market that brought lots of locals selling mainly to locals that was located in a village just outside the reserve but I can't remember the name of the place. Things were much cheaper and you saw a lot of things that you might not in the Narobi market. Pretty much though, if you are in a tour group, much of what you see may be traditional but is also staged and a source of income for the people. It's the same all over so take it with a grain of salt when you visit an "authentic" cultural event.

Was it by chance the Serena Sorova Camp?

The Masai Mara is excellent, the wildlife is great.
If you want to experience the true cultural experience, try going into the interior and interacting with the people.

hi,

has anyone been on a trip to Kenya to see the Massai Mara? if so do you think that the cultural experience was authentic or staged especially for tourists? any feed back, positive and negative would be really helpful.

thank you

Of course they are all staged especially for tourists !

If you want an authentic experience have a look at what the NGO Massai Experience is doing and offering

In the Maasai Mara area but also in other regions....with walking and 4x4 safaris organized with and in Maasai communities and villages

They only started about 2 years ago...no tourists at all in those places before that....and very small groups....6 to 8 people maximum at a time

I can give you the link to their website if you want ...don't hesitate to contact me
