Guys & Gals,
Hi,
ive hired a chubby campervan for 5 weeks, which cost me around 1200 GBP, little expensive i know but thy are very well reccomended company. All there campers are 57 plate mitsubishi's. I am doing the same route as you up to Cairns. i arrive on 24th Jan. I also have WHV so im gonna use the 5 weeks to drive up the coast and find a place i really like and try to find work there. The company is www.travellers-autobarn.com.au. I booked it through STA Travel who did everything for me. Hope this info is helpful.

Do you think that will be enough time?
Good prices on camper van tho.
Sorry, i dont have answers to your questions so my reply is kind of pointless. But i was also looking for info on how long it'd roughly take to do sydney to cairns. Some people say a month but others take 3 or 4. Wanted to head up the east coast after new year then maybe head to melbourne but not sure!!
I guess it depends if you're going to stop and work somewhere for a period of time. When I drive Sydney to Cairns I took about 4 weeks which included 6 days on Fraser Island. I think you could spend 6 weeks to do the trip more comfortably and stop/stay at any place you found interesting, assuming you don't stop and work somewhere for a month.
I really enjoyed driving from Darwin to Ayers Rock, and Ayers Rock to Adelaide was more boring. If you get the chance I'd say it's worthwhile though, there are plenty of great places to stop and relax such as Litchfield National Park, Kakadu, Katherine, Bitter Springs in Mataranka, and then all of the central Australia attractions like Devils Marbles, Ayers Rock, Kings Canyon, the gorges, Rainbow Valley etc.
If you're planning on a 3-4 month stay then buying will definitely be cheaper. Try looking on gumtree to give you an idea of prices. Once you're there you can check the boards in hostels. Usually plenty of campervans for sale and you can get some real bargains.
Me and gf hired a chubby campervan from travellers autobarn april 2009 - great company, thought had waterleak and called oz R.A.C and they were out within half hour (wasnt a waterleak in the end!).
Travelled from Sydney to Cairns in 4weeks. Was quite comfortable amount of time - managed to stop 3-4 days in Byron bay, and almost a week around the gold coast.
doing it again March 2010 however getting the 2-3 person hi-top due to space and having a fridge/grill etc and the same price as a chubby which is basically a bed in back of van.
From my experience if you need a van for longer than a month i would buy. short term it is definetly worth hiring.
