Thinking back to the months leading up to my Australia visit, im trying to remember what convo's i had with friends about the trip ...
Spiders & Snakes were mentioned alot so that would be up there.
I surf to and without a doubt the threat of sharks will rank highly, i mean often cloud shadows got my heart rate up when in the water, and the news of a 14 year old local lad being killed @ the same surf spot i was @ 4 days earlier didnt help matters
Aside from that i really didnt have any other issues!
My 5...
1.) Insects
2.) Snakes
3.) Getting lost in the wilderness
4.) Being lonely
5.) The exchange rate (I'm british)
Im travelling in february with my best friend for the first time and we are doing the east coast for 3 months and my fears are:
1. Everything that can bite me
2. Being pickpocketed
3. Will i take enough clothes
4. Will it live up to my expectations
5. Have i saved up enough money
here are some of mine...
- the heat wave
- snakes and crocodiles
- be lost in Sydney
- insects
- to fall in love with the country
it will be difficult if number 5 happens, I mean, leaving would be harder then..
1-Meeting/having to share public transport/space with loud drunken boors who are proud of their convict origins.
2-godawful food.
3-chronic racism.
4-being exposed to chronic alcohol abuse.
5-being unable to understand the dialect.

Sounds like your glass is half empty, and that you might like it that way.
I spent 7 months in Oz and came across next to nothing that I actually feared. i.e. snakes spiders, etc
Well tell a lie, i didnt actually fear them. I just had no idea of what to do or how I would react if i did meet such.
I once met a black tiger in the wild while driving on the main road in Tassie somewhere so I stopped and went back to photograph it. My mate went around the front of it bout 3-4 metres away and obviously it must have thought he was threatening it, so it sat up in the strike position. He didnt go any closer i can tell ya. Was really nice to see in the wild. As for spiders and other such things I learned quite a bit about them while there from going to different shows, parks etc so theyre not to be feared rather revered for their purpose.
I once worked with a guy outside of Perth digging up little dung beetles, for a few weeks. Was really intriguing what impact those little buggers have for the countryside in Australia.
Most people I found even in oz dont come across snakes etc that often. Its not like they sit waiting on the population to arrive around the corner for a tasty meal. Think realistically, they wont be out to get you at all, but as i was told and wisely, be prepared, knowing what to do and how to react when in the real situation is the best defense, not beating the thing to death either.

I also hitched, though perhaps some parts where I havent been it may not be recommended, just going from some incidents that make the news in some areas. We have murderers in Ireland too if thats how you want to look at it. I also hitch in Ireland and i suppose i could say some people are probably best not to hitch with though its hard determing that until your in the car with them.

replies to these
1. Drink water, whats left of it in gallons and you'll be fine, oh forgot to mention they do have lovely juice (in SA only i think) called - Iced Coffee - delicious. Was my kickstart everyday out there and the strong one too!
2. snakes and crocs - follow steve irwins methods with these and you'll get along just fine. Nah you wont see too many of these really. More likely to be a kangirooooo waiting to bash your car headlights
3. Sydney, never been in the place, Im told i may as well be walking in Dublin! So sounds like i aint missing too much, plently of dubliners at home here.
4. insects, go look for the little buggers, you'll struggle to find em as well. They dont sit waiting as i said.
5. fall in love with the country - dont, it'll break your heart. Well mine aint quite broke yet sorry but i have pined for the place pretty much every day for the last two years since ive came back to Ireland. Its sooooo good for me....
Oh to see that bright sun again every morning and early not like the dark ones were having right now in Ireland.
