I always thought one-way tickets are far more expensive (if you buy two) than return tickets. In that case a return ticket and a rebooking fee would still be cheaper. Have you checked the prices? However, if the visa conditions don't state you need a return ticket then I would assume you don't need one.
I'm flying with Air Asia. It's a budget airline anyway - No discount for buying a return journey at the same time.
In the old days, visiting Australia, I remember I had a fully refundable ticket from Australia to New Caledonia. I never went to New Caledonia of course - I just had the ticket to satisfy the visa conditions. And booked the next leg of my journey when the time came (or an airline had an irresistible offer).
My plans tend to change at short notice anyway - so if Australia no longer require proof of outbound travel, that's great. I just can't believe that things can be so easy though.
Good to hear that it doesn't cost more if you buy tickets separately. Enjoy your trip!
