There's some stuff by 'Avon" called 'Skin So Soft - and don't let the name fool you - there are plenty in the army that use it against mozzies.
There is also this product called "Off" that works like lotion. they keep mosquitoes away from your skin even if you left your tent open or there's a hole or something.
What about using smoke or one of those citronella candles? I heard on the TV that the Dengue mosquito is now in Australia, beware.
Hi Charlie,
The best defence against mozzies is to cover up. Trousers, long sleeves etc. Then you only have your head to worry about.
A good tent should have a double door- one being a mozzie mesh that will stop them if you're disciplined in opening and closing it all the time.
As for lotions, you just have to find something that works for you. Even strong DEET and citronella don't help me, but I've found Lavender oil to be pretty good. Smells OK to us humans too!

don't they exist everywhere?
anyways, smoke are good too... I don't know what they call it but I have tried it once, lit it up near the bon fire.. one more advise that I can give is that stay away from watery location. they may have more mosquitoes as they tend to live and multiply in water.
yes i have used that avon stuff before and it really works, they didnt intend it to be a mozzie repellent but someone accidentally found out that it really does work.
Aeroguard is the best.
I've been living in NZ for 5 years and I think you'll find mosquitos aren't too bad. The sandflies are pretty thick down South though. Anyhoo, my partner and I are currently travelling around and camping and we have been using the afforementioned 'Off' with very good results. The mosquitos seem to come out at night mainly and it gets cool enough to wear longsleeves and trousers. I hope you enjoy New Zealand, it's breathtaking in every direction.
I agree that the sandflies are bad in NZ and if you react to mosquito bites you may react to sandfly bites too. I react quite badly to both and the best repellent I have found out here is called Repel which is a Deet- based roll on. You could also burn mosquito coils outside the tent before you go to bed.
