Hi everyone, all my plans are coming togeather now. I'm going to be in New Zealand in September, just wondering if Lake Tekapo is good this time of year to start with, or if im better off going to Auckland first for the weather?
I dont think it would matter too much which order you did your trip. The closer to December you wait the warmer it will be. Ive only been to Lake Tekapo in winter for the snow boarding so im not too sure what it would be like at the time you are going.
thanks for your reply, just trying to get an idea on where to start
I've never been in Lake Tekapo in September. You might still catch a bit of snow (gorgeous!), or for all I know it could be just cold and rainy and miserable (inconceivable!) - I thought before that the lupins might already be blooming that early in spring, but the intertubes claim they don't really do until November.
If you can go to Lake Tekapo again in May or July/August 2011 to catch the real beauty of winter, I'd head to Auckland first this September, and then go see Lake Tekapo in late spring / full summer. If you can't, then personally I'd follow the hope of snow and go there right away.

Hahaha Sander I think you're right with the cold and rainy and miserable bit for Lake Tekapo in Spring The flowers don't bloom until late Spring. I thought they do in early Spring and didn't think to check the intertubes and found that out "first hand". To make things worse, Pepe's was closed! That was the only Tekapo trip I've made with no Carbonara pizza. It was a disaster
Yup I think Auckland is the best place to go first, I can do to Tekapo later in the year. I want sunshine, not snow and rain.

Auckland won't be particularly warm in September but it will be starting to improve by then. To give you a rough idea, here are some stats on the in Auckland.

will i get to see a glacier at that time of year, sorry if thats a stupid question

Yes, the glaciers are there all the time. It's actually a nice time to travel around New Zealand as it's less crowded so you don't have to book all your accommodation ahead, and prices can be lower. Just make sure you take waterproofs and warm clothing.
