I was looking at this website too. Unfortunately not used it yet so can't be of much use but I am interested in any replies you get.
I did see an article in the guardian about this website though so might be worth looking on their website.
I was also wondering with this site, or volunteering in exchange for meal and accommodation in general, if you need to have a WHV/working visa to participate? As I would like to do something like this if/when travelling; more of a way to get to know locals and local knowledge and to make a difference rather than because i can't afford hostels and food tho

I came across this website too a while ago and I was very intrigued by it. I think it would be a good way to get a real feeling of the people and live in different places and cultures rather than just doing the traditional backpacker/hostel experience.
Unfortunately I haven’t used the site either or know anyone who has so im not really much help to ye but I would be interested in replies ya get.
Cant really comment on the visa situation but ive already been granted my Oz visa so it wont do me any harm
Im heading to Melbourne in September so if anyone is around there then it would be cool to meet up

I don't know about Workaway sorry, but I just wondered what avenues you'd already tried for work? Have you been looking online? I'm doing a whv later this year so just wondered. I don't know (because I've never done it) but it might be that you can find work more easily when you are actually there by going into temping agencies etc. I think this is what I'm going to try though I'm also hoping to look for something before I head off.

Happy Days, ive been looking at some websites regarding jobs in Oz and found them very helpful to get an idea of what kinda jobs are out there for travellers/backpackers. My older brother, who did a WHV year in Oz and NZ a few yaers back, said the best way to pick up work is just to pound the streets of whatever city you are in and try to make as many contacts as possible. I would like to have something lined up before i head off to Oz, starting in Melbourne in September so ive been checking out these websites, hope they help

thanks for those job links! I'm hoping to get something sorted out before I go too, I'm looking for quite specific experience but will do most jobs to get some money to keep going. I think I want to base myself in melbourne or adelaide to being with.

So i finally decided to apply to both Helpx and workaway and wanted to share my experiences...
workaway is 18 euro for two years, and though i thought the price was ok, hardly anyone replied to my requests. Kinda annoyed me.
I wasted time and money.
So i decided to try Helpx and hi jackpot. It is 20 euro, but worth every penny.. Almost all of the potential families got back to me, seemed really friendly and have a lot of jobs to tide over my time travelling.
It is a lot of volunteer work, occasional payed jobs, but i think for accomodation and food the experience is worth it!!
Definately give Helpx a go if you are looking for volunteer work!
hey all, have been travelling around using both workaway and helpx for a while now... it is THE BEST way to do it. for a start u live and learn with the locals, theres some amzing experiences and opportunities to be had via this avenue for working in indigenous communties or in outback stations. some experiences include helping to re-build a community in arhem land - where you need an invite from a community member just to get on the land, to flying in a helicopter mustering cattle in the outback.
i've also had the chance to work on ships and sail around the islands for free working as a cook or deckhand too, no experience needed (also check www.findacrew.net for more sailing opportunites - heaps in oz/nz/pacific islands)
you work around 4-5 hours a day for accom and food, and i haven't had a bad experience yet, everyone really looks after ya and don't take advantage. depending on the work you want to do, depends on the hours but mostly you work mornings so have the rest of the day to explore and you can learn the way these locals live their lives on a daily basis and get to see the hidden gems of a place.
try couchsurfing.com aswell, normally u just rock up and stay at a locals house (on their couch or whateer they have to offer) for a couple days and the same thing happens, locals passing on local beliefs and you experience the side of the culture not many people get.... hell i rarely stay in hostels anymore, only when i desperately feel like connecting with beer infused backpackers.

Hey ..I´m in Europe and have used Workaway to stay in France as well as Italy.. Stayed in a place in the South of France that was a MANSION beautiful pool, nice hosts..I couldn´t believe my luck Just had to help them with the the garden ..and occasionally driving the kids to school. I generally found that writing a specific email to a host would get an answer. I even had to turn some down!!! Got to earn some real money now..anyone know if there´s much paid work going in Spain?
