How many Members?

I was recently asked how many members there are here on TP, and I didn't have an answer...So, how many members are there here on this website?

There are 289,272 members from 244 countries.

You can find the ever-growing stats here:

This page is accessible from the home page. Depending on your layout, there is a short list of new member usernames on the right hand side, about 2/3 of the way down the page. Just under the list is a link for More Travellerspoint Stats. You can go another page further to .

Oh look! You are part of the Respected Member list!

Hard to believe, isn't it? Me, Respectable?

Anyway,

Thank you very much.

But Isadora - since when is the Cayman Is. part of S. America or the following islands part of Central AmericaU.S.V.I., Turks & Caicos and Puerto Rico)? The UK includes Wales and Scotland the last time I looked. I'm really shocked to see so few members from Scandinavia - I thought Norway was the home of TP?

Saint Pierre and Miquelon - ??? We learn something every day!

I'm sorry - I don't decide which islands/regions belong to which continents. If I recall correctly, and that's a very big IF, the information is taken from the CIA World Factbook. Whether completely accurate or not, it is the generally accepted list. Yes, Wales and Scotland are part of the UK, but the countries list is broken down so each country is also listed.

But, if you notice Guam is also considered part of Oceania because of it's location - not that of territorial possession. The same holds true for Saint Pierre and Miquelon even though they are under French rule. It's works by location and not political affiliation. (Again, could be totally off the mark.)

I think the Overlords flip a coin weekly to see if OZ or Norway is the home of TP. (Just kidding, guys!)

Actually, Daawgon is completely right with his questions.
If you go to the travelguide, the countries and dependent territories are listed under the right continent/region. So Caymans Islands is part of the Caribbean and actually the Caribbean and Central America are part of the 'official' continent North America. We just split it up for our own convenience. I put 'official' because I know the continent discussion is a difficult one: just check wikipedia for this to be boggled

On the TP frontpage, it currently says: Nurturing Travel Addictions for over 150,000 travellers worldwide! I guess it's time to have an automatic update every 50,000 new members or so

O, by the way: the Netherlands is the official home of TP, no doubt about that one guys. I am more than pleased to have an official gallery in my house as well, if the overlords would like that

That list divvying up the countries by region is quite old, from the very beginning of TP. As Michael mentions, it's been rather improved in the wiki division, but even then there will always be a discussion about it. Turkey for example; Europe or the Middle East?

I think Norway does quite okay on the list. For having a population of 4 million, its 1546 members is quite a lot more than Spain's 1869, or even the Dutch 1930. Sweden has more than double the population of Norway (and as the Norwegians like to joke, half the medals in the Olympics ), but only 983 members.

By the way, these 'citizenship' stats are skewed ever since we removed the requirement to fill in your citizenship when signing up

Hey, looks like the million photos is not too far away!
