New Zealand - Going it alone!!!

Hi Everyone, I have just been granted my New Zealand WHV and am planning to head there start October 2010. Originally I was going with a mate who has since pulled out so I am now starting to feel a bit daunted at the thought of it. I have already been to Australia and stayed there for 2 years but I had the comfort of initially going out with my best mate. It was the best 2 years of my life and I really want to see New Zealand but I guess I am just a bit scared of the thought of going it alone!!! Can you share any experiences or do you have any suggestions on how best to start my journey alone??? I will be flying into Auckland!!!

Hi Mo

I also came to NZ alone on a working holiday visa and I had a great time (hence still being here now 5 years later!). I moved into a shared house and met loads of people that way, and also met people at work. There are loads of other people here on working holiday visas and many of them will be alone so there will be plenty of people for you to hook up with.

I started off in Auckland too. Ponsonby is a good suburb to look for a shared house in as it's a great area with lots going on and it's close to the city. There's plenty of shared accommodation available in that area because of the amount of large houses there. I think it's really important to make sure you get into a good shared house where you feel comfortable and where you feel like you are going to make friends. and are good places to look.

I remember feeling really daunted when I arrived here on my own 5 years ago as I didn't know a soul here, but I soon felt settled - I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Let me know if you need any more tips/advice about Auckland or NZ.

Thanks Bex.

Did you do some exploring first or did you start looking for work when you fist arrived - I was thinkn I should maybe do a short tour with the kiwi exp to start with and then this will break me in and perhaps I will make some new friends :o) - did you travel with the Kiwi exp at all??

Thanks
Mo

I looked for work straight away in Auckland as I'd just had 3 months travelling round Australia so was running out of money! I did my trip round the South Island later in the year when I had some money saved. Whilst I was working I also did loads of stuff around Auckland and went away on a few weekends to various places in the North Island.

The Kiwi Experience has a reputation for being a bit of a party bus and is geared towards a bit of a younger crowd, so I used and for my trips round NZ. Both were really good but I'd probably recommend Magic out of the two as they seemed a bit more professional and their buses were in better condition. They do pretty similar routes but Stray claim to try and get off the beaten track more. I met loads of people travelling around NZ this way so it's definitely a good way to do it, whichever company you choose to go with.

By the way when you first arrive in Auckland I'd recommend staying in a hostel in one of the suburbs such as Parnell, Ponsonby or Mt Eden rather than in the city, as I think you will get a better impression of Auckland that way.
