OZ in sept '10 for a year and have underactive thyroid?

Hi,
I'm new to this as you can prob tell!!
I'm going to OZ for a year in sept and have underactive thyroid - been to doctors and they will only give me three months worth of tablets so was wondering if anyone knows how much they cost and is there a cheap way to get them e.g. medicard? heard about it but not sure exacly what it is and how to get it ect - any help plz?

I'm going in november for 1 - 2 years and I'm an insulin dependant diabetic, which can be very costly without the NHS. A months worth of meds will cost me around $60 to $80 thanks to the reciprical health agreement between Oz and the UK.

more info and the cost of your exact meds will be available by looking at the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (after some searching) on this website www.healthinsite.gov.au/topics/Pharmaceutical_Benefits_Scheme_Drug_Listings . i found my medication on here with details of costs involved. I'd suggest typing in either thyroid or the name of your drug/family of drugs

hope this helps

Hi Sophie,

Me and my girlfriend are travelling around the world in Sept and she also has an underactive thyroid. Do you know anyone who lives in spain?..Her parents live out there and the prescription she is on (possibly same to yours?) is really cheap out there. Here mum has sent over several boxes and we are trying to stock up for the year. The only alternative you have is to go to the doctors with your parent and fill out a form and sign giving them rights to collecting your medication and things on your behalf. they can get the next three month batch for you and post it over to you where ever in oz you are. If your like her you will have a medical card meaning you prescription is free so this would be the cheapest way.

Hope this helps, bet your really excited to get going...I know we are!

Hi Sophie

I'm in the same position as you. I know that you can only get 3 months to go in with but I'm not sure after that either. I didn't know people could just post meds to you. Is it only a parent that can do this?

I thought I read somewhere you have to get a prescription from a doctor in australia and then get get them as normal from a pharmacist. Not sure of costs and how many they'd give you though. I wouldn't want to be having to do it every month! Shelsbels advice seems good.

Good luck and have a great trip, I can't wait!

Thanks for replies everyone!

Antonio its funny you should say about Spain - my mums ther at the mo and asked if she should get me some but I wasn't sure if I could take them to OZ as they wouldnt have the label / sticker with my name etc on it?? Also what card are you refering to?? I live in Wales and prescriptions are free so dont have any cards like that?

shelsbells - thanks for the website - I shall hava look now

Happy_Days - I asked my doctors and they said they will either give me a letter or you take your repat presciption with you to show that you really need it

IM SOOOOOO EXCITED

Was hoping to do my visa but friend need to renew hers so its another few weeks

I've decided to get visa, bank account, Tax file number and sim card seperate - whats everyone else doing?? I'm thinking ANZ or HSBA bank account - any thoughts??
