Im planning to start my first trip abroad to start in January 2011, reason being that gives me a good amount of time to get a good amount of money behind me aswel as time to plan it properly. I'm thinking i'd like to start with a trip to America as there are quite a lot of places i'd like to see, has anyone else done a month or 2 travelling the USA? If you have could you give me any advice? Im 21 and travelling alone as none of my friends have the money to do it and some have commitments in the UK. If anyone else is planning to do something similar please get in touch. Has anyone got any advice in planning my trip, im doing ok but i have a feeling knowing me i've most probably forgot quite a few things.
I usually try to be as upbeat as possible, but seriously, the USA is one big hell hole at the moment. Why would any sane person want to throw good money after bad in this place? Everything is priced sky high here, service is extremely rude, and all a tourist sees are a line of chain hotels and fast food outlets. If you want something different (while still speaking Eng), I advise you to look to New Zealand, Australia or even Canada. Most Americans are trying to get out of this mess of unemployed drifters, high taxes, school shootings and terrible food ASAP! I'm serious
I didnt know about all that, its such a shame though because ive wanted to visit America since i was a child. I want to visit Miami, L.A, San Fransico, New York, The O.C and although this sounds strange i want to go to Forks for a couple of days as im a big Twilight fan and want to see the sights from the film lol. Oh well im not visiting until next year so hopefully things will be abit better by then.
The timeliness of Daawon's comment is interesting. There was a suspected shooting incident (turned out to be a BB gun not a regular gun--but they were shooting at bicyclists) at schools in the district where I work (Hayward) just yesterday. P.S. I work at the district office, not at one of the schools, but we still went into "lockdown" at our office and police were on-site yesterday:

Despite this, I think that things aren't quite as bad as Daawon portrays--but they are bad. People have much less money than usual--and therefore don't go out to good places as much, but instead all buy their food from fast food places. As a result, the regular restaurants have to raise their prices--some significantly--just to stay in business--and their hired help take out their frustration in poorer service. On Thursday I was at one of my regular lunch spots and found that they had raised their normal $8 to $10 lunch menu up to $12 to $18 just to survive (although I doubt they will make it with prices that much higher). And with these places going out-of-business, there are about 5 people out-of-work for every one open job (and this means about 20 people apply for every opening).
Still, there are places that are doing well--for example, New York is doing better than California, and Texas and most of the midwest (North Dakota, South Dakota, Illinois, Nebraska, Illinois, and even Louisiana) are doing better than places like Michigan, South Carolina or Florida.
Cal - Guess how much I spent on lunch in Seattle last week - $44. not including tip. No, it was not fast food, but that's still ridiculous to say the least.
looks like its going to cost more, but its really worth it for me as i really want to go America and have for long time. You 2 are both obviously from there so know far more than i do but its just one of them places i really want to see. Whens the best time to come as in weather? i dont want to come over prepared for sunshine if its freezing cold haha!!
Whoa. I've been travelling through the US since January, and I've had my usual awesome trip meeting nice people and checking out a lot of what America has to offer. Sure, there are bad things going on, but don't let a few bad apples ruin your taste for travel.
You can make your trip as costly as you want or as cheap as you want. I ate lunch in Seattle 3 days ago for 7 dollars.
As far as your trip goes, what do you want to see, and what are your interests. The US in January is the middle of winter, but you can still find a wide variety of climates and places to go and things to do..
Try to get more specific to get more ideas..

I think September-October or April-May are the very best. January is fine in Florida or Hawaii, but pretty cold and rainy in many more northerly areas.

The places i want to visit are a little random but hey thats me lol, so far i've decided on Miami, Hawaii, The O.C although im not sure where abouts in the O.C, deffo L.A to see the Hollywood walk of fame etc, San Fransisco, New York (shopping!! lol!!) and i'd like to visit Forks for a few days simply because im a major Twilight fan and would love to see the places it was filmed lol.... any other recomendations??
xhayleyx - Are you talking Forks, Washington? If you are, Jan would be the absolute worst time of year to go to that remote tiny town. Forks, WA is on the Olympic Peninsula in the wettest part of that state (and possibly one of the wettest places in North America). I love that little town in the middle of nowhere, but I suggest late spring at the earliest. Forks is next door to the - a fantastic place if you appreciate nature and like wet climates.
I have driven in that area in September, and seen that many areas of the park were being shut down (even that early) for the winter. Jan would be very lonely and extremely sodden.
