Hello!
Here's a from a German who went RTW from London to LA, Honolulu, Auckland, and Hong Kong (returning direct to London). I thought it was an interesting report, and it might help to give you a few ideas.
This RTW starts in Australia and goes through Europe and back Down Under.

Hi Lee,

Different travellers plan in different ways. Some will just save forever and pay for the first deal they're offered, others will sit in a travel agents, or online - day after day getting all the possibilities, there are those who will take advice from travel forums and finally (my category) there is the traveller who finds the cheapest flight from one country to another, while looking at the necessity whether to book the flight in advance or leave till a short time before moving on.
There are good and not so good deals to be had in every one of the categories on offer.
You hear stories of people who have paid (say) £3,000+ for a RTW ticket, then you get to know of someone that has got half way round the world for under £500. It all comes down to how much time you have and the homework you're prepared to do, oh and obviously the route you want to do as well.
One of the best ways forward is to listen to others that have done one or more RTWs and how they got on. Not just how they got on with flights, but with the pitfalls as well as the great times. Every journey, pretty much, has good and bad memories, especially in countries that are being visited for the first time. Listening and taking notes from those who have done it already, are the best moves you can make when planning your RTW.

I'm starting to pimp these guys out a bit now but i'm really happy with the service i'm getting planning my trip: i'm using "round the world experts", i've also got quotes from STA (really quite friendly and helpful) and "round the world flights" (sent me an overview quote email but with little follow up - i may look into it a bit more with them) but the round the world experts have impressed me the most because they're so knowledgable on how i can save a few quid here and there!
