The Philippines

For culture, while you are in Manila do drop by Intramuros to see the ruins of Old Manila or you are a bit adventurous you can go to the crowded old quarters in Quiapo and Sta. Cruz area... you can also take day tour to Corregidor to have an idea of WWII ruins.

You may also take a day trip to Ilocos to see the remains of the Spanish colonial period. To experience the Muslim Filipino culture you can fly to Davao or Zamboanga which are both in Mindanao island..

For the beach you can definitely go to Boracay. From England you'd definitely enter through Manila to get Boracay. You may also check the beaches in Palawan, Bohol, Camiguin, Pagudpod, Cebu, Laiya, Puerto Galera, and Caramoan.

I have a few photos from my time in the RP. Pagsanjan River is an interesting day trip. Gets you out of the city, on a river up to the falls. Puerto Galera is a beautiful white sand beach with great swimming/diving. An easy trip from Manila.

Hmm it depends! What do you want most out of your trip? Outdoor activities, beaches, nightlife, shopping or..?

In my experience though, I had a wonderful time hiking up Mt Pinabatu and checking out the Banaue Rice Terraces (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). If I had to pick just once area to revisit though, it'd definitely be the Palawan Islands. The beaches there are absolutely gorgeous, and I spent a full day of my 14-day trip just island hopping on boats and soaking up the sun. Puerto Princesa in particular has a really beautiful Subterranean River National Park -- basically an underground river formed from limestone karst that you can canoe through. Gorgeous!

My only piece of advice would be to do some research and make sure to avoid the typical tourist traps -- it's gonna be pretty easy to run into those in the Philippines.

FYI, go to Intramuros if you have interest in history, it was 1 of the boringest things I did in Manila so far

and I spend a LOT of time there

All those other suggestions from wanderfly and pau are more fun than Intra imho hehehe

hello there

when your in manila you could try to go to the north first visis banaue and sagada... you would enjoy treeking to the rice terraces and going to cave.. then after that you could visit palawan.. for me palawan is better than boracay they have much nicer beach.. you can do diving and under ground river... when ur in manila you could also check out chill-out guesthouse.. the owner and staff are very nice.. they have nice affordable rooms..

I am considering a trip to the Philippines.

1) Can anyone recommend highlights of their own trip/s to the country.

Our visit would be 1 - 2 weeks. My partner and I are 30 years old. We are both experienced travellers. We would like to see some of the country's culture and beauty. And would also like to chill on a beautiful beach.

2) We would arrive in Manila. I was thinking of visiting Boracay Island, which we would fly to. Is this a good idea or is there another, cheaper way of getting there?

I have been all over the Philippines and I must say there a lot of things to see from Palawan's underground river, Bicol's Mayon Volcano, Benguet's Banaue Rice Terraces, Davao's Banana Plantation, Ilocos' Vigan walk, Cebu's Sto. Nino Church, Zamboanga's Pink Sand Beach and Laguna's Mt. Makiling. You just have to know what do you want to do during your visit.

Well, you have to two choices when going to Boracay but not necessarily the cheapest especially when Airlines have promo fares. If you want to go there instantly and conveniently, you should take a flight to Boracay via Seair, Seair is the fastest carrier that could get you to Boracay and they have more flights than any other airlines in the country, you 'll be there in 35 mins. You can also try Cebu Pacific and Zest Air which are generally much cheaper. The other way is to take the RORO - by bus and ferry - this is recommended for adventure travelers, travel time would around 24 hours but you will be able to see the country side in the provinces. You will start from Manila - Cubao Station, then go to Laguna to Batangas port. From the port, the bus will take the Ferry going to Calapan, Mindoro - home of the famous beach destination Puerto Galera - then travel to San Jose City, Mindoro. If you want something new, it is worth the try. Or you may want to go to Boracay by RORO then come back by plane, it is really up to you.

I have tried this several times and I had a good time. It really depends on what kind of traveler are you. You decide.

Highlight of my trip was definitely "Banaue Rice terraces"... It was really beautiful...

Palawan - Underground river was very good... heard El Nido islands are way better than boracay... but no easy access from manila...

Boracay is very crowded... Cheaper option would be RO-RO trip(bus ferry combo from manila)... it takes some 12 hrs this way...

Pagsanhan falls was a nice day trip...

Chocolate hils in Bohol... heard its a nice place... didnt get a chance to do it myself tho...
