we are arriving in Buenos Aires, and plan to take the bus up to puerto iguazu. We then want to carry on to paraguay and up to bolivia. I have been finding mixed anwers about whether we will need to cross into brazil at the falls in order to make it to ciudad del este...any information that anyone has would be great!!
Most of the countries don’t need to have visa for or , However you can check over the hyperlink in each country, and see if you’re going to need or not.

do you know if it is possible to get from the argentinian side of the falls to paraguay without needing to pass through brazil?
We passed from Argentine to Brazil then from Brazil to Paraguay (ciduad del este) last year. We are Turkish and none of these countries requred a visa for us.
I ve been there twice times. There s no border crossing in Puerto Iguazu/Argentina to the other side of the River Parana/Paraguay. You need to pass Brazil.
There s often a queue at the border office in Puerto Iguazu/Argentina. Everybody have to show the passport and get a stamp. But not everybody requiere a immigration stamp for Brazil or Paraguay. So if you ve to leave the bus at the brazilian border , does it don 't wait. The next bus to Foz do Iguazu/ Brazil often goes 30-45 min later. There re some operators on this route. Every bus comes from an other company. So you have to pay a second ticket, altough you ve one. you ve the opposite situation at the Border crossing from Brazil to Paraguay. The bus comes all 5 minutes. You need one ticket only.
My recommandation : Do all touristic trips ( e.g. Itaipú barrage) from the brazilian side of the border. Because it's dangerous to stay in Ciudad del Este/Paraguay. It ś for cheap shopping in the morning only. I stayed there once. There re 3 Security Men in the hotel and 3 Security men outside of the hotel. The locals don 't go without wappons in the afternoon.

In 2008, we stayed in Puerto Iguazu and did a daytrip to Paraguay by taking small car ferry across the river to Paraguay directly. We just asked at the place we stayed to see if a taxi for the day was able to get us there. On the other side, you can enter Paraguay but you have to try and arrange transport in Argentina, as there is no transport whatsoever.
So technically: yes, you can get into Paraguay directly from Puerto Iguazu but you'll find better onward transport by going through Brazil and onwards to Ciudad del Este and Asuncion. You might find a direct bus to Asuncion from Foz do Iguacu in Brazil as well.
